SECOND CIRCULAR
Dear Colleagues,
By now you must have gone through my first circular dated April 2, 2024, and its corrigendum issued on July 3, 2024. The circular of the Local Secretary has also been uploaded on the website. I am happy to re-iterate that the preparations for the forthcoming session of the Indian History Congress to be held between 28th-30th December at Punjabi University, Patiala, are in full swing.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SESSION
- Gautam Sengupta (Kolkata) will take over from Professor Aditya Mukherjee as the General President at the Inaugural Session.
- The Sessional Presidents are: Professor R. Mahalakshmi (Ancient India), Professor Abha Singh (Medieval India), Professor Umesh Bagade (Modern India), Professor G.J. Sudhakar (Countries Other Than India), Dr. Marxia Gandhi (Archaeology) and Professor Sebastian Joseph (Contemporary India).
- Professor Yogesh Snehi, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University, Delhi will deliver the Professor S.C. Misra Memorial Lecture on 28th December scheduled at 6:00 p.m.
- The IHC Symposium on “Creative Visions of the Past: Sculptures, Miniatures and Cartoons as Sources for Reconstructing History” will be held on 29th December 2024 at 6:00 p.m.
- Professor Seema Bawa, Dr. Anjali Ouhan Gulia and Professor Urvi Mukhopadhyay will be the distinguished speakers.
- An Exhibition on ‘Caricaturing Culture in India: Cartoons and History in Modern World’, is also expected to be inaugurated on the first day itself.
- There will be four panels during the course of the Indian History Congress Session. They are generally held on the second and third day (before lunch) of the Congress.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS REGARDING LOCAL ARRANGEMENTS
I. Last date for receipt of Delegate Fee: The last date for the receipt of delegate fee to be submitted on the link provided by the Local Secretary is 12.12.2024. Please refer to the Circular issued by Local Secretary uploaded on IHC Delegates are requested not to delay payments of delegate fee beyond the last date because accommodation will be arranged on the basis of delegate fees already received. If any delegate, despite this plea, arrives at the venue without payment of delegate fee in time, they will have to find accommodation on their own.
Accommodation cannot be assured to delegates who have not paid their delegate fee and submitted the duly filled in proforma on or before the last date. Delegates travelling with their families are requested to arrange for their own accommodation. Non-IHC members cannot avail of accommodation provided by us.
II. Delegate Fee Remittance: Fee for hotel accommodation (on share basis) is Rs. 5,500/-; hostel accommodation (sharing) Rs. 3000/-; Local delegates Rs. 2,500/- and Research Scholars/Students Rs. 2000/-.
Please do not forget to mention your name and membership number in any communication with us.
The confirmation of payment of the delegate fee must reach the Local Secretary not later than 12th December, 2024.
III. Reception: The Reception Desk at Punjabi University, Patiala (refer local Secretary Circular) will be active from the morning of 27th December, 2024 to the afternoon of 28th December, 2024. The Help Desk at Patiala Railway Station will be active from December 26th evening to the 28th afternoon. The volunteers will be at the station to help arrange for transport.
Important Points and Last Dates to note
- Please pay the delegate fee as mentioned above by due date on the link provided by Local Secretary.
- The registration form can be found on the website.
- Cheque payments of any kind (incl. multi-city cheques) will NOT be accepted
- Accommodation at Patiala will be provided from noon on 27th December 2024 to 11:00 a.m. on 31st December 2024.
- Meals will be served at the venue starting with dinner of 27th December 2024 till breakfast on 31st December 2024.
- Transport will be provided from the place of accommodation to the venue ONLY in the morning and after dinner.
Submission of Paper:
If your paper (ONLY soft copy) is not received by 30th November, 2024, it will not be possible to include it in the List of Papers, and you may only be able to make a very brief presentation on the last day, provided the presentation of listed papers is over and there is still time left for papers outside the list. Please bring a hard copy of your paper and submit it to the respective Sectional Presidents without fail. Also do not fail to mention your membership number along with your name on the top of the paper. Please also attach your membership slip while uploading the digital copy.

Prizes for Papers:
There are a number of prizes for the best papers submitted at the Indian History Congress session in particular sections or fields of history by members who are not above the age of 45 years, and the last date for the receipt of papers submitted for the prize is 30th November, 2024. Proof of age (e.g., copy of Aadhaar Card or PAN Card or Passport page or High School Certificate) is required to be attached to the papers submitted. Please note, however, that there is no age-bar for Prize No. 9 below:
- Professor Vijay Kumar Thakur Memorial Prize ( 10,000) for the best paper submitted for Section I (Ancient India).
- Professor J. S. Grewal Prize (Rs. 10,000) for the best paper submitted for Section II (Medieval India).
- Professor Partha Sarathi Gupta Memorial Prize (Rs. 10,000) for the best paper submitted for Section III (Modern India) and Section IV (Countries other than India).
- Professor J. C. Jha Memorial Prize (Rs. 5,000) Section III (Modern India) for the best paper submitted.
- Professor J. C. Jha Memorial Prize ( 5,000) Section IV (Countries other than India) for the best paper submitted.
- Professor Sudhir Ranjan Das Memorial Prize ( 10,000) for the best paper submitted for Section V (Archaeology).
- Professor Papiya Ghosh Memorial Prize ( 15,000) for the best paper submitted for SectionVI (Contemporary India)
- Professor B. B. Chaudhuri Prize (Rs. 10,000) for the best paper submitted on Economic and Social History of India (Ancient, Medieval and Modern).
- Dr. I. G. Khan Memorial Prize (Rs. 15,000) for the best paper submitted on History of Science and Technology (No age bar).
- Dr Nasreen Ahmad Memorial Prize ( 7,500) for the best paper on Gender History.
- Professor O. P. Jaiswal Prize (Rs. 7,500) for the best paper submitted on the Indian National Movement.
- Gyaneshwari Jaiswal Memorial Prize (Rs. 7,500) for the best paper based on Archival/ Epigraphic data.
- Dr. Prasanna Kumar Biswal Memorial Award (Rs. 1000) for a paper on Freedom Movement
A member who wishes their paper to be considered for any of the prizes above is requested simply to indicate on the first page of the paper the award/s for which it is to be considered, attaching along with it the proof of age document.
The announcement and award of prizes on papers submitted at the 83rd session will be made at the 84th session.
As most book Awards are biennial, and the IHC had given them in session 2023, this year no Book Award will be given.
