Professor Jaya Tyagi
Jaya S. Tyagi, Ph. D. has been Professor of History in the University of Delhi where she taught in the Department of History and before that in Sri Venkateswara College for thirty-eight years. She was awarded Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Indian Institute of Advance Studies, Shimla in 2010. Her areas of specialization include Ancient Indian History, social history, gender studies, studies on households, religion, rites, rituals, and their social context. She has written several articles in peer reviewed journals and chapters in edited works, including study material for IGNOU and in Cambridge University Press volumes. She has published the following monographs- ‘Contestation and Compliance’: Retrieving Women’s agency from Puranic Traditions,(monograph published by Oxford University Press, 2014) and ‘Engendering the Early Indian Household, Brahmanical Precepts in the Gṛhyasūtras’, (published by Orient Longman Publishers, 2008) and a coedited work with Shankar Kumar, Indian History and Culture, (In English and Hindi, published by Ratna Sagar and University of Delhi, 2013). Recently, she has also co-edited a volume with SZH Jafri and Amar Farooqui, ‘Pushing the Boundaries of South Asian History, Essays in memory of D N Jha’ ‘published by Primus Publishers in 2024. The volume brings together exceptional work of historians from Ancient, Medieval and Modern Indian perspectives. Her most recent work, ‘South Asia Before the Common Era , Revisiting Sources and Historians’ Interpretations (2025) discusses the challenges relating to interpretation of Ancient historical sources. She was Director, WSDC (Women’s Studies and Development Centre for Advanced Study) in the University for six years between 2015- 2022. As Director, she spearheaded the Center which was given the status of a UGC-recognized Center for Advanced Studies. She has also been the Chairperson of the Internal Complaints Committee, University of Delhi. She has spoken in several International and National seminars and conducted faculty training workshops in various universities. She has also conducted programs for gender sensitization in Government, Private and educational organizations.
