Professor Shireen Moosvi is a distinguished historian renowned for her expertise in the economic history of India, particularly focusing on the Mughal Empire era. With over four decades of teaching experience at Aligarh, she has left an indelible mark on the academic landscape. Throughout her illustrious career, Professor Moosvi has garnered numerous accolades and honors, underscoring her scholarly contributions and commitment to historical research.

As a Senior Fulbright Fellow in the United States (1983-84) and a Resident Fellow at the Bellagio Centre in Milan, Italy, sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation (1990-91), Professor Moosvi has engaged with international academic communities, fostering cross-cultural dialogue and intellectual exchange. Recognized as a National Career Awardee by the University Grants Commission (UGC) from 1986 to 1989, she has also served as a Visiting Fellow at various universities and academic institutions worldwide.

Professor Moosvi’s association with the Indian History Congress spans several decades, culminating in her tenure as Sectional President in 1996 and later as General President from 2016 to 2017. Additionally, her contributions to archaeology have been significant, evident in her membership on the Central Advisory Board of Archaeology (CABA) for three terms spanning from 2005 to 2019.

A prolific author, Professor Moosvi’s body of work comprises a wealth of research papers, books, monographs, and edited volumes. Her recent edited volume, “Agrarian Poverty in Colonial Uttar Pradesh: The Dufferin Inquiry, 1887-88,” published by Primus in 2023, reflects her ongoing engagement with critical historical inquiries. Among her notable publications, “Economy of the Mughal Empire, c. 1595: A Statistical Study,” published by Oxford University Press in 1987, stands out as a seminal work in the field.

Beyond her scholarly endeavors, Professor Moosvi has been actively involved in countering communal interpretations of Indian history. As Secretary of the Aligarh Historians Society, she has played a pivotal role in organizing seminars, symposiums, and publications aimed at promoting a secular and scientific understanding of history. Professor Moosvi’s multifaceted contributions continue to enrich historical scholarship and foster inclusive narratives of India’s past.
